Six top tips to help you in your search.
For most brides-to-be, the prospect of shopping for their wedding dress is total girlie 'heaven'. What could possibly be more thrilling than searching for the perfect wedding dress, a dress that's so often the realisation of childhood dreams? For other brides, the process can seem a bit more nerve-racking for a number of reasons which is perfectly understandable as not everyone is a size 6 and we each have our own unique perspective on things - especially when they're personal in nature.
So whether you consider yourself an 'enthusiastic' bride, a 'hesitant' bride or a 'somewhere-in-between bride', how and where to start looking for your gown can be one of the hardest parts of dress shopping. This is where a bit of planning and preparation can really pay off so that the whole experience of tracking down your dream dress is as enjoyable and rewarding as possible.
So we've prepared some top tips to help you in your search at a really exciting time.
1. Find the specialists
Many bridal shops claim to cater for the plus size bride. While this may sometimes be true, the reality is that the number of dresses available to view and try on can vary from modest to virtually non-existent. It's much better to take some time to seek out stores that are true specialists in plus size bridalwear. By visiting a specialist, you'll reduce the possibility of disappointment through lack of choice while dramatically increasing your chances of finding 'the one'. And there's more, if you decide to go along to a plus size salon, there's every possibility they'll have a whole room dedicated just for you.
2. Get in touch
For any bride, contacting a bridal shop is essential but moreso if you're a curvy bride because you need to be absolutely sure that the bridal shop you intend to visit carries a good selection of dresses in your size. So call, email or inbox your chosen shops and request information before you consider making an appointment there. The last thing you want is to be totally underwhelmed by a lack of choice not to mention wasted time and effort.
3. Consider your budget
Make sure that any larger size wedding dresses available in a bridal store fall within your budget. After all, having a wide selection of gowns to choose from is only helpful if they're affordable. It can be heart-breaking to find a dream dress only to find it carries a price tag that's way beyond comfortable. Again, check the price range of the dresses with your chosen bridal shops before you visit to get an idea on their prices.
4. Make an appointment
Most bridal shops operate an appointment system for at least part, if not all of their working week. Naturally, a salon will always try to be as accommodating as possible to brides who arrive in store without an appointment but this isn't really an ideal situation for either the bride or the salon. There may be a lack of time or resources to fully meet the bride's needs so for the best possible experience in a bridal store, always book an appointment. That way you'll be assured of having a bridal consultant to help and advise you.
5. Talk to the experts
One of the biggest advantages of going to a plus size bridal specialist is the experience and advice you'll find there. They'll work out your size and your body shape in a heartbeat and they'll also know how to talk to you in a way that puts you at ease. And the best bit is they also know exactly what's going to look amazing on you.
6. Collector's corner
It's a good idea to put together a little portfolio of pictures of any gorgeous gowns that have really caught your eye. You may have come across them in a magazine, a brochure or on the Internet. Bringing them along to the bridal shop can often be very helpful for your bridal assistant who'll instantly be able to identify similar dress styles to those you've already chosen.
So with just a little bit of planning followed by a few simple actions can help take the stress out of shopping for your gown and instead make it more enjoyable and much more fun - which is exactly how it's meant to be.
